The hot melt procedure can be used to make cloth and unidirectional prepregs. The solvent dip procedure can only be used to make fabric prepregs. Depending on to resin used prepreg can be classified into thermoset and thermoplastic prepreg. Thermoset prepreg accounts for majority of prepreg market share. The thermoplastic resin in thermoplastic prepregs can be melted or softened at high temperatures, whereas thermoset resin begins as a liquid and fully impregnates the reinforcing fiber in thermoset prepregs. Basalt fibers, a type of composite fibers, are formed from very fine basalt fibers while para-aramid fiber textiles are infused with a controlled amount of epoxy resin to create kevlar fibers prepreg. Basalt fiber is similar to fiberglass; however, it has better physicomechanical qualities and is substantially less expensive than carbon fiber.
